Hotels/Motels 2003, was a multimedia event in which a number of visual and performing
artists transformed the Travelodge hotel, in downtown San Diego. Each of the 30 rooms was engaged by artists in an unusual
way, creating a series of portals into strange, thought provoking environments. The art included multimedia installations,
painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media. Some rooms had been be converted into alternative performance spaces for
spoken word, performance, and music ranging from acoustic, punk, hip-hop, to the more experimental. Two rooms (in addition
to the already reserved performances) were open venues to poets, bands, solo and acoustic musicians, activists and other creative
individuals providing a PA and an open microphone to anyone was willing to be heard. In addition, the audience was encouraged,
but not required to bring actual artwork, portfolios, writings of any kind, photo albums, project works on the side of the
building, perform works in progress/site-specific, bring drums and other instruments, share monologues, songs, dance, and
anything else that was in the works.
Saturday, December 20, 2003, 2pm-Midnight
Inspired by the experimentation and spontaneous quality of Fluxus "hapennings"
as well as the expressive and interactive qualities of Burning Man.
Hotels/Motels was an
experimental festival, dealing with the traditional exhibition space: public verses private venues, accessibility, intimacy,
as well as the general communities participation. In addition, this project was concerned with categories and boxes
in which various genres and disciplines (especially in the arts) create various social/political, as well as disciplinary
limitations. The goal of the event was to provide a very intimate and accessable environment for artists and other
professionals to share their work with the community.
